Introducing YOUYOGA Guest Blogger: Danelle Drury February 21, 2012

Danelle Drury, 200 CYT

Danelle Drury– Hi! I’m Danelle and I have enjoyed working with kids for many years, working as a remedial reading teacher, fourth grade teacher, teaching drama and music to children from 1st through 7th grades, as well as working as a nanny. I was first introduced to kids yoga in 2006 when I assisted with children’s classes for Yoga Tree Ireland, and I’m so excited about helping expand YOUYOGA’s offerings to include classes for children.

I have been practicing yoga myself for about ten years, and I’m so blessed daily by sharing yoga with others. I love how children’s yoga is a joyous combination of the young’s natural creativity, imagination, love of motion, love of sound, and their thirst for learning.  By sharing yoga  with children it can help to promote self-awareness, discipline and confidence in them. It’s the ultimate learning through play!

I look forward to your family joining me as YOUYOGA in Overland Park, Kansas launches its first 6 week Kids Yoga program beginning Wednesdays, April 4, 2012 @ 4:00 – 4:45 pm.  The 6 week session will cost $54 ( $9 per class), or you can drop-in for $12 per class.  Feel free to contact YOUYOGA for details: 913.645.7974.  See you in April!!!

Yoga For Kids! January 31, 2012

Danell Drury, 200 CYT

Kids naturally love to move, and they still have their natural flexibility and suppleness that we start to lose once we spend hours sitting in chairs, like in school! Yoga for kids encourages this natural love of motion and facilitates adventures in which kids can further explore their bodies and the amazing things they can do. Yoga adventures also stimulate young imaginations by encouraging the visualization of various animals/creatures for poses: “Make your body into a little ball like a tiny mouse! Or let’s put our legs up the wall and stand on our hands like upside down spiders!  Can you be a peeing dog? Try to lift one leg behind you in the air from dog pose?!”

In addition to being a whole lot of fun, yoga for kids also creates kinesthetic awareness that promotes the development of good co-ordination and the fine and gross motor skills so important to the developing child.  Kids’ yoga helps to boost self-esteem and confidence and provides an environment  where positive peer relationships are fostered, and healthy life style habits encouraged.

Typically, kids’ yoga classes are based around a story or adventure, and the children’s bodies become the characters, the things they encounter, even the modes of transportation for the adventure – boats, bicycles, airplanes….and as with adult yoga, a time for quiet stillness and reflection is part of kids’ yoga too. Relaxation and deep breathing are coping tools that can be as important to children as to adults.

Some tips for encouraging our kids to do yoga at homeTry Being Trees!

  • Take time to be trees in a forest (vrksasana/tree pose), letting littler children just balance the toes of the raised leg on the floor next to the standing foot.
  • Talk them through noticing how their one foot is rooting into the earth. Let them imagine roots growing from the foot, deep down into the ground, to hold them there.  Draw their attention to the strong and firmly held trunk of the tree –the leg and torso (abs and pelvic floor muscles engaged to help balance). Let them wave branches (their arms and fingers) in the breeze.
  • And then take a moment to sit down quietly, close your eyes and imagine you are in a forest. What sounds can you “hear”? Birds chirping? Wind rustling?  Encourage children to make the sounds they imagine hearing for you.
  • Talk about how trees are important to life on earth, how they clean the air for us to breathe and provide homes for birds and animals and how we can look after trees – e.g. recycling paper.
  • Then do some deep breathing, lying in savasna/relaxation pose, imagining that you are lying in a beautiful forest. Describe the forest for your children to visualize, focusing  on all the senses – what can you hear, feel, see, smell, taste as you lie there. Or if there is an older child, perhaps have them describe the forest – great creative writing practice!
  •  Once you have had a few minutes of quietness, encourage the children to draw the forest they pictured and the animals or birds they heard in it.

Introducing Danelle Drury January 25, 2012

YOUYOGA in Overland Park, Ks is happy to announce the addition of  yoga instructor Danelle Drury.  She shares the same passion for yoga….seeing the practice of yoga as a way to bring out the best that already lies within self.  We feel that she will be a wonderful addition to YOUYOGA, and as things unfold we’re looking forward to adding more classes and opportunities for the whole family to begin, as well as develop a yoga practice.  Please receive Danelle with warmth and acceptance as she shares her vision, and love of yoga with YOU.

Welcome to YOUYOGA Danelle Drury

I have been doing Yoga for about ten years. It started out as just a physical workout, to improve strength, balance, flexibility – – but almost without my noticing, it grew into a spiritual journey too, and I found yoga permeating every aspect of my life. It helped me as a singer, an actor, a grade school teacher, a daughter, a partner, a friend. It really helps me be a better version of myself while, at the same time, helping me discover and appreciate who that really is. I found myself teaching yoga in my drama classes, to help with posture, relaxation and focus, and using yoga in my own acting career to balance and calm myself before going onstage.

In 2006 I was lucky enough to spend some time in Ireland with my aunt, a wonderful and inspiring yogi and yoga teacher, helping out in her yoga studio office and assisting with teaching kids yoga classes.  I thought, “When I grow up, I want to be a yoga teacher!” I don’t know that I’ve grown up yet,  but I did my formal yoga teacher training though KC Fitness Link, and am so blessed every day by the every widening circle of yoga students, teachers and practitioners that I now find myself surrounded by.

I love how, as Inyengar says, yoga means…”all our bones, flesh, fibers, ligaments, joints, senses, mind and intelligence are harnessed. In this way, the practice of asana, performed with all elements of our being, awakens and sharpens intelligence, until it is integrated with our senses, our mind, our memory, our consciousness and our soul.” And I love how yoga teaches us to be in the moment, day by day, accepting where we are just now and knowing that, “if you learn a lot of little things, one day you end up knowing a big thing.”
