Ericka shares: Acceptance, Growth and Confidence with Her Yoga Students August 29, 2012

I’ve began taking Yoga 11 years ago after having my first child.  The idea of intentional movement with conscious breath was a welcoming idea due to my dance background. I was blessed to have my first instructor  teach me from the beginning to meet myself were I was at in the moment.  Acceptance lead to growth. Growth gave way to confidence. Confidence birthed a willingness to try new things.

8 years ago, I earned my 200 hour Yoga certification from KC Fitness Link with Darryl Olive.  In January of 2012, I completed my Chair Yoga Certification with Lakshmi Voelker founder of Get Fit Where You Sit.   My goal as a yoga instructor is to share a balanced approach to yoga.  I want my students to understand proper alignment, along with the importance of proper breathe in each pose.  Let’s not forget… a strong sense of self too.  In sharing a strong foundation, my hope is that my students will have the opportunity to find acceptance, growth, and confidence within themselves.

I’ve had the opportunity to teach a Matt Ross Community Center, 50 Plus Program of Johnson County Parks and    Recreation, City of Lenexa Senior Center, as well as Children’s Mercy Hospital, and I’m looking forward to sharing our approach to yoga at our own yoga space: YouYoga

With all the new growth and changes happening at YouYoga….I thought it important to share with you the teachers of YouYoga too. We want you to know our stories, our passion, and what our goals are while sharing our teachings with our students.

So, over the next several days/weeks I’ll be posting our bios and photos in an attempt to give each of you a greater picture of who we are at YouYoga….as each of us strive to let your yoga practice be reflective of YOU!

Kids…gotta love their perspective August 25, 2012

So, while driving my kids to school today…I shared with them that I may not be able to attend as many class room parties/field trips with them this year due to putting energy towards growing YouYoga’s offerings for our current and future …
students…The car became quiet, so to fill the space I shared with them that both of my parents worked, and were never able to attend daytime school events during the year. Hoping they’d find appreciation for all of my attendance during the past school years….At last a response: my 9 year old, son stated: “Yeah Mom, but Papa and Abuela (my parents) worked at General Motors building cars for the whole entire world to use. You just teach people yoga, and they really don’t need that…”

Really??? I know this was his attempt to say, it would be nicer if you could come on a field trip with me this year, and yes it would be! But, I also want him (both of my children) to understand that taking time for self to connect with breathe, body and mind should be  just as important to people, if not more than making cars for the entire world!

We invite you to come join us as our class offerings will be expanded beginning October 1……details are coming soon! Until then, check out our schedule for current class offerings:

Together we can show our children/grandchildren that happy, healthy people are the most important thing in the world!!!

Yoga and Shoulder Pain…it doesn’t have to be August 22, 2012

Have you ever hurt your shoulders during a yoga practice? I’ve actually heard of students leaving their yoga practice behind due to intense shoulder pain. As a yoga teacher, I firmly believe that if we learn how our bodies work……then we can learn to move with our bodies in less harmful ways, helping us to develop strength, flexibility, and the balance we desire. I’ve found an article at MyYogaOnline that shares information on the shoulders, and how they function to support a yoga practice. Please enjoy and allow yourself sometime for an ah-ha moment!

“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life.  Be happy now.  Don’t wait for    something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future.  Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.”

Fresh Food – to go! August 14, 2012

While picking up a few staples at Whole Foods the other day I came across a sample stand……..I love samples.  It’s a great chance to try a product before you buy it.  On this particular day they were sampling a product called, Core.  It’s prepackaged raw food that you can take and grab on the go.  It caught my eye because it was a portable, food that contained whole foods.  This is perfect for me, because I feel like I’m always on the go!!!  And when you’re on the go the best food choices aren’t always being made……even if they’re intended.

I mentioned these bars are made with whole foods, so let me share the ingredients with you:  Whole Oats, Almonds, Raisins, Flax, and Ground Spices.  That’s it!  They are handmade and packaged, and they must be stored in the fridge, or they’ll sprout… about that, living food in a package that’s easy to grab and go!  I love it!!!  Core also claims that eating one bar with 2 glasses of water equals 1 full bowl of oatmeal.  This meal creates 3 hours of stable energy helping you to get through the morning task, or afternoon lows.  I’ve always tried to eat oatmeal, because I understand the benefits, but I strongly dislike the texture.  Core is giving me yet another chance to work oats into my diet, and it’s pretty darn good.

They offer 4 different varieties, along with vegan options too.  So if you’re looking for  a portable whole food option that packs a protein punch  Core just might be a great addition to your diet.  I invite you to find out more about Core, visit their website @

All the best to your health and wellness!
