Shift In Thinking…. July 12, 2011

Okay, we have this very unfortunate blue tile floor in our kitchen.  I say it’s unfortunate, because blue isn’t my favorite color.  I’m more of an earth tone girl, and I’m not sure how blue works into this scheme.  We’re looking to update our kitchen for our own personal use, but also to sell our home hopefully in the next few years.  We don’t want to spend tons of money on this project either.  On the topic of saving money my husband suggest that we keep the current floor to save time and cost.

What?  This idea doesn’t compute in my head.  All I could say was, “No!  I don’t like blue.”  I said this over and over, as if my husband didn’t already know this fact.  I felt my energy change and the imaginary door in my brain shut airtight close.  After awhile, I settled down and started thinking of the possibilities.  I began to remember that many people who have seen our kitchen would tend to comment on how much they liked the floor.  This I never understood, but remember I don’t like blue!

I also began to remember we don’t plan on being here forever.  Not to mention I could change the look of the cabinets,  backsplash, countertops, sink, and lighting.  That’s a lot of change!  It began to make little sense to spend all of my focus on not liking the floor.  I began to research complimentary, as well as contrasting colors that coordinated with blue floors.  I was pleasantly surprised to find so many colors that I liked. My thinking began to shift.  Cautiously I thought maybe this could work.

After a field trip to our local Home Depot I left feeling confident with multiple paint options, countertop selections, and the perfect color tile.  I shared my findings with my husband and we are both excited about the possibilities of our new kitchen.  Is it our dream kitchen? No, but it will be a very nice kitchen for us now.

In order to expand my view of thinking I had to get out of my own way.  I had to detach from my idea of what the ideal kitchen should look like.  I also had to acknowledge that true growth comes from letting go of “perfect ideas”.  If we hold on too tight about how we think things should be…..we might often times miss out on an opportunity to experience something untried, or challenge ourselves as individuals.

This is where real development occurs….not sticking to what we know, but rather venturing out into areas that are a little more foreign.  This doesn’t mean I’m now a big fan of blue.  However, it does mean that I can work with it…..if necessary.  That alone leaves me feeling a little victorious about the situation.
